Netflix horror movie codes

Horror is the most finely divided genre in the Netflix code system. Using only the parent code, Horror Movies (8711), mixes zombie films, psychological horror and comedy horror into one screen, which makes choosing harder rather than easier.

Decide not that you want "something scary" but how you want to be scared, and a single code gets you the right flavour.

Knives and chases — Slasher (8646)

A killer works through a cast one by one: classic horror structure. The bucket is formally Slasher and Serial Killer Movies, and it holds everything from 1980s classics to recent remakes. It leans on direct shock rather than slow dread. If that is exactly what you want to avoid, this code is also a useful way to identify what to skip.

Things without an explanation — Supernatural (42023) and Cult (6998)

Ghosts, possession and curses — fear that does not resolve into everyday logic — sit in Supernatural Horror (42023). The strand dealing with demons and ritual is split out as Cult Horror (6998). The two overlap heavily, but cult skews religious in subject and atmosphere while supernatural is broader. If you want dread built from mood rather than gore, start with these two.

Things that come in numbers — Zombie (75405) and Monster (947)

Zombie Horror (75405) is what it says. Monster Movies (947) covers creature features generally, and it includes titles closer to action or disaster than horror, which can make it easier viewing for a mixed audience. Deep Sea Horror (45028) is a much narrower slice set at sea — few titles, but a high hit rate if that is your thing.

Scary but funny — Horror Comedy (89585)

Films that use horror technique but aim for laughs. A safe pick when watching with someone who does not enjoy being frightened. Teen Screams (52147) is similar in effect, centred on teenage characters and generally lower intensity.

What codes cannot sort

There is no code for "less gory horror" or "no jump scares". Codes divide by subject, not by intensity or technique. If intensity matters to you, narrow the field with a code and then check the maturity rating on individual titles.
